In 1999, Local 564 was granted a charter by then TWU International President Sonny Hall. The original Local provided representation for the American Airlines Aviation Maintenance Technicians, Facilities Maintenance, Fuelers, and Stores personnel at LAX, SAN, SNA, TUS, and PHX. Within a year the Local added SFO, SJC, SEA, and RNO as well.

The first contract negotiated where the new Local participated was in August 2001. This contract provided what was then industry leading compensation and benefits. A short time later new members from the recently acquired TWA were added bringing the membership up to approximately 1,500.

Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001 the entire industry has been hit by huge layoffs. The Local has not been immune and our current membership hovers at around 825.

In 2003 the TWU membership agreed to concessions that were put in place to avoid American going in to bankruptcy. Since then labor relations have been contentious at times.

The TWU continues to work towards securing top paying jobs while also understanding the unprecedented economic environment the airline industry operates in.
